Somebody once said that, “The way of the world is meeting people through other people.” Nowhere else could we see this statement come to life so well as in the world of social networking.
A term that some might have heard 40 years ago in reference to attending the right events in order to make the right business deals, social networking is no longer solely for the white collar worker. Social networking is now open to anyone with access to a cell phone or computer and ranges from the basic text message o business blogging, and Flickr at the White House.
Many people today are social networking without even realizing it. If you have a Facebook, MySpace, Blogspot, SecondLife, Flickr, or Twitter account; or, if you participate in a gardening, parenting, or business online forum; or, if you regularly send text messages from your phone, you, are a social networker!
For those of you who have managed to avoid all the above, it may be difficult to grasp the full concept. Basically speaking, a social network may also be referred to as an “online community.” These communities are often made up of people with common interests or hobbies. Some communities are very private, some are very open. There are business communities, social communities, gaming communities, and communities within communities, much like in the “real” world.
What is difficult to grasp is that the online world and the “real world is no longer a separate entity for many people. According to one web site, two years ago, over half the teens in the United States participate in some kind of social networking.
The information and resources available through social networking are nearly endless since social networking extends throughout the world.
