"You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." ~from The Velveteen Rabbit

*****

For odd reasons, at the time of this writing, I have just finished reading the story of The Velveteen Rabbit. Perhaps you know the story. Maybe it was read to you as a child by a parent or grandparent or teacher; or, maybe it was what we might call today an “Early Reader--” one of the first books you read as a child…maybe one you checked out from the library!

The story is simple: a stuffed rabbit wishes to be real; a boy loves him and declares it to be so; then, the boy falls sick with scarlet fever and, after he recovers, the rabbit, along with other toys must be burned. Because the rabbit had been loved, a fairy brings him to a meadow where the rabbit discovers that, at last, he is truly real.

If nothing else, this story is a story of “becoming.” We have a lot of “coming of age,” or “reinvention” stories in our modern society. Another word for these type of “becoming” stories might be “graduation stories.”

Graduation may be defined as the “tempering (or) refining of something to a certain degree.” It is closely related to the word, “gradual,” meaning, “arranged” or “taking place by degrees.” For many of our patrons who are in high school or college, this definition may hit very close to home.

For the “graduate,” there is always a level of heightened expectation before the graduation event. Pressures from within and without: What to do? Who to become? How long? Why? Yet, as I look at these questions, it seems as though they are queries that are made throughout the course of life, and not regulated to times celebrated by a graduation ceremony.

As I think more intently on this idea of graduation, graduation seems to be a way of life. With or without ceremony, we move through the stages of life: infancy, childhood, youth, adulthood, relationships, parenthood, grandparenthood, retirement, and, eventually, the final graduation comes to us all.

The truth is, if we choose to grow, despite the tempering and refining, then we graduate. However, if we choose to “drop out,” to refuse to graduate to the next stage of life because, as the Skin Horse warns in The Velveteen Rabbit, it sometimes hurts, then we choose not to be loved, we choose not to become real.

Wine for Literacy

Well, March is here and spring is still around the corner; but, the weather is definitely getting warmer and hot weather will be here before we know it!

As the hot weather approaches, what better way to cool off than with a glass of wine on a pre-summer evening? The only entrance requirement is interest.
~Lady Bird Johnson

The quote above by Lady Bird Johnson reminds me just what a library means to a community. Everyone is welcome -- it doesn't matter if you are young or old, rich or poor, whether you are interested in the latest best seller or looking for research material on any subject. The library is here for everyone to use and enjoy in whatever way suits them. Free public libraries were formed by the people for the people and have become an American institution.
I also thought the quote this month to be quite fitting with the disturbing news we received at the end of January concerning library budget cuts on the state level. Since we are a democracy, we play a major role in how our elected officials conduct business -- and also in their re-election. Let them know what you think about the proposed cuts.
The proposed budget ELIMINATES:
* Loan Star Libraries (direct aid to public libraries)
-- the Llano Libraries purchase audio books and Net Library eAudio Books with these funds
* All state funding for TexShare Databases
-- includes the Handbook of Texas Online, Heritage Quest Online, NetLibrary, and much more. The libraries will be required to pay full amount for access
* The K-12 Database Program (used by public schools)
* State funding for library development
-- includes workshops, continuing education and consulting that our librarians rely on for keeping current with library services for our community
* And much more such as InterLibrary Loan, and TANG grants for the consultant to help with computer problems
"Most states fund community libraries with an investment of roughly 10% of their budgets; even with the Loan Star program, the State of Texas has only been contributing about 1% of total public library funding.
In addition to these cuts, Texas libraries also stand to lose over $8 million in federal funds -- and perhaps more. As a heavily populated state, Texas is eligible for substantial and vital funding. Texas now gets about $11.5 million/year from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. To secure this money, Texas must meet a basic match for support of library services and a maintenance of effort (MoE) requirement. At a time when people are out of work and relying on libraries in record number, the state cannot afford to allow statewide library services to decline." from Texas Library Association
Texas libraries are in danger! Your support is needed! Write elected officials to oppose cuts to libraries. Ask your friends, neighbors and everyone you can think of to send messages as well. Or better yet, call them.
Names and contact information for our local representatives are listed below.
If you would like more information about how this will directly affect the Llano County Library System, you may contact Dian Ray, Director, at 325-247-5248 or by email at llano@llano-library-system.net.

Send these Texas State Representatives a letter or give them a call to let them know how important your local library is to you.

* State Senator Troy Fraser
101 US 281 N. We are excited about all the December programs that we have to offer to help make your season a little brighter. However, instead of attempting to recap our open house, special children’s programs, Cookie Crumble, and youth hayride and cookout, I wanted to talk a little about the season itself because, you know, there’s a lot going on. In here, out there. On the news, in the world. Concerning my house, my job, my friends, my family. Some of it’s concerning; most of it should hold little, if any at all.
Christmas is busier than it ought to be, more stressful than it should be, not as organic as it could be, and more commercial than it used to be.
Most of us probably cook too much, clean too much, spend too much, and, subsequently, complain too much.
We worry about the right present for the right person, the right clothes for the right party, the right meal for the right people.
If you are anything like me, you either give up or wish you could sleep the sleep of the dead (for a day or two anyway!). After all, gone is the warm breath of summer, winter is cold, and the year is dying.
However, as I watched my newborn daughter portray the Baby Jesus in a pageant, and watched my husband tenderly wrapping her “in swaddling clothes;” when I saw big brother holding her hand; when a man fighting for his life made Christmas happen for a lot of children, I realized… There’s a lot of Life in this season of Christmas.
Whatever else the season brings, our simple holiday celebrations ought to remind us of the Life and the lives around us. And not only the lives of those we know and care about; the poet, John Donne once wrote, “Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.” May the joy and loss of our fellow man be equally shared.
I am reminded of a little boy in one of our children’s programs who boldly announced, “Our Christmas tree is dead! But, we’re going to get a new one!” May all that is dying or simply dead be renewed and brought to Life in this season of “Joy which shall be to all people.”

New Group Focuses on Understanding Grief

Contributing author: Llano Memorial Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, Jackie Hatfield

Understanding Grief: Wow! Two words that encompass such a myriad of thoughts, actions, and emotions.

Beginning September 20th at 10:30AM, Llano Memorial Hospice will partner with the Kingsland Library Lunch & Learn program to offer support to members of our community who have recently lost a loved one. September 20th will be our first meeting, the start of a new group, and the beginning of many wonderful things.

During our time together, we will hope to develop a better understanding of the stages of grief: denial, anger/blaming, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. We will also examine different ways to cope while going through the grief process, exploring options and learning what works best for each of us.

For more information concerning the program, please contact Carol Lovell at the Kingsland Library.

Thank YOU

To all our AMAZING VOLUNTEERS who have given of their time during this summer’s Texas Reading Club. (Not because I had ever had a bad experience with any of the staff; but, simply because this was my first job and I did not really know what kind of expectations they would have of me.) I will also admit that I was extremely people shy and had not done well interacting with anyone too much older than a teenager like myself.
As it turns out, all my apprehensions and nervousness were for nothing. All of the staff at the Kingsland Library and even many of the volunteers were very grateful for my work and were kind and thoughtful towards me. My time on the KLB staff has been a wonderful learning experience for me. I have learned to talk to people effectively, be more confident in my own choices, and to be responsible and dependable when others need me.
My favorite part of working at the Kingsland Library would definitely have to be a combination of working with patrons at the circulation desk and gaining the experience needed for me to maybe become a true librarian myself (learning how the system works, the different rules and regulations, and how to take fines and book suggestions) if I choose that career path in my future.
Even if I do choose a different profession, I will always treasure the opportunity that I was given because it has reconnected me with my love of reading and has given me something positive in my life to hold onto even when I was not feeling the best.
I hope that I will have an opportunity like this again in my future because this summer has truly been one I have appreciated and loved.

TEXAS TEENS READ!!!

As the children’s Texas Reading Club program begins to wind down in the month of July, the Kingsland Teen Library League and Texas Teens Read programs are picking up steam!
Regular (summer themed) TLL activities kick off on July 1st with a special Independence Day celebration featuring… pie!
On July 8th, we’ll attempt to beat the “Dog Days” of summer with a slew of water activities and sandwiches from Subway— first come, first served!
Snowball fight anyone? Christmas cookies? Deck the halls? Christmas in July returns on July 15th. Wear red and green and prepare to freeze…?
Beginning July 22, the teen summer reading program (Texas Teens Read!) officially begins. Students in 6th through 12th grade are invited to hop on our time machine (yes, you read that right), participate in even more awesome activities, and compete for some great prizes by reading their socks off! (Prizes will also be given for participation, so really, no one loses!)
The program will run July 22nd and 29th, and August 5th and 12th from 4:30 to 6:30PM with exception for the August 5th program, which will be held from 2:30-4:30PM. (Parents, please be prompt in picking up your student(s)).

July 22: Fast Forward to the Future Ever wonder what you’ll look like when you’re old or who you might become in the future? We’ll take a step back into the 1970’s as we melt and recycle old records for new uses. Bring favorite photos and insert your face into old record albums!
Does your CD collection need an upgrade? Bring all your old, unwanted CDs for a classic CD swap with your friends! Guidelines for acceptable material will be given beforehand and CD players will be available to listen to CDs before you swap!

August 5th: Just About Now (2:30-4:30PM)
Have you thought about what you might do someday in the near future? You know… when you “grow up?” On August 5th, we will have as many professions and schools represented as we can possibly get! Parents and youth are invited to stop by booths, get information, ask plenty of questions, and possibly win some draw prizes!

August 12th: Awards Picnic
On this day we’ll celebrate current and future success! Reading prizes and awards will be given out (must be present to win) for the program. We’ll tuck into some great summer picnic food and engage in some awesome picnic-type games!

***
But… before that all gets started, be sure to stop in at the library for an afternoon at the movies every Thursday in July. And, you know, while you’re here, you can always pick up a book and get your read on!

***
Call the library with any question about times or program details.

Summer Reading Program (June Newsletter)

School is out, the weather is hot, and starting June 16, 9:30AM at the Kingsland Library— summer is here! Join us for Texas Reading Club 2010, Catch the Reading Express! The program lasts for five weeks and is completely free to children in grades Pre-K thru 6th while space is available.
Parents should pre-register their children for the program as soon as possible to ensure their child/children is/are able to participate. Complete registration packets with information and pre-numbered nametags will be available at the circulation desk of the KLB. If packets are not available when you come in to register, spots may be reserved on the pre-registration list and you will be contacted to pick up your packet(s) when they are ready.
New this year… reading tickets!!! Instead of keeping a reading log, TRC participants will earn one ticket for every ten minutes they read or are read to; these tickets may be placed in various drawings for a chance to win some really cool prizes! The more one reads, the more chances one earns! Prizes will still be given out to everyone who participates in the TRC program and special awards will be given to individuals who read the most minutes and to the age group who reads the most overall.

TRC program dates and times are as follows:

Wednesday, June 16
9:30-11:30AM
9:30-10:30: Registration (for those who did not pre-register)
10:30: Special presentation featuring “Mr. Puppet” (Parents/guardians are issued a special invitation to accompany their children during this program as activities volunteers are not present on show days.)

Wednesday, June 23
9:30-11:30AM
All aboard! Refreshments will be provided by members of the group.

This program is offered free of charge. The Kingsland Library serves as the main cultural, educational, and informational resource center for the community. County funding is limited and does not cover all the necessary expenses for such a wide variety of resources. The Friends of the Library fill in the gap offering a multitude of services.

Although financial support and fund raising are primary functions, The Friends also provide volunteer hours, host monthly meetings & events, provide supplies, books, DVDS, etc...
